Is Mount Pilatus worth it?
What you get for the half day
I grew up in Kriens looking at this mountain, so take my enthusiasm with that in mind. But the reason I still guide the Golden Round Trip after eleven years is that it is engineered as a day out rather than a viewpoint. Up the gondola through the forest, the glass Dragon Ride cabin swinging in under the cliffs, an hour or more on a ridge with ibex below the terraces, then the cogwheel tipping you down at 48% to a boat that takes its time back to Lucerne. Bruno from France called it a great day exploring the Pilatus circuit, and circuit is the right word.
What the reviews actually say
The guided tour reviews repeat two themes: organisation and time. Robinette (US) found it very well organized; John (UK) got exactly what he wanted with plenty of information; Keeley (Canada) recommends it even for people afraid of heights, which I would qualify: the Dragon Ride is a big steady cabin, not a chairlift. On the self-guided side, Sam (UK) noted the transport was efficient but weather on the day affected views, and that is the honest caveat under every rating. Chris (Australia) had some navigation confusion at first and still thought the views and facilities at the top were amazing. Shane (UK), on the Kriens ticket, simply called it well worth the trip. The lower-rated product is the bare round-trip ticket at 4.5, and the friction there is choosing an exact cogwheel time, not the mountain.

When it is not worth it
Three cases. If the summit is in cloud and the forecast says it stays that way, save it for another day; the ride is good but the panorama is the fee. If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass and your only criterion is what is free, Rigi is fully included and Pilatus is half price, which I lay out on the pass page. And if you want glacier and guaranteed snow, that is Titlis, per the comparison.
The way to make it worth it is to go early on a clear morning and do the full loop. A Kriens up-and-back at three in the afternoon in July is the version people write lukewarm reviews about.
