Best time to visit Mount Pilatus

The 2026 calendar, plainly
Which ticket you can buy depends on the date more than most visitors realise, so here is the year as the operator has published it. The cogwheel opens on 11 May and closes on 29 November. The scheduled boats from Lucerne to Alpnachstad stop on 18 October. The gondola and Dragon Ride from Kriens run all year, with two revision closures: 30 to 31 March and 19 October to 27 November. Put those together and the guided Golden tour does this: boat until 18 October, then a lunch voucher instead; cogwheel both up and down from 19 October to 27 November while the cableway is closed; cableway up and cogwheel down on 28 and 29 November. Then winter.
Month by month
June, July, August and September are the months I would send a first-time visitor. Everything runs, the Flower Path is open and the summit is usually clear of snow, though not always: snow on top is normal into June and possible in any month, which is why I wrote a whole what to wear page. Kerrie, a reviewer from Australia, took her family of four up in a heatwave and found the summit significantly cooler, which was the point. May and October are quieter, cheaper on the operator’s seasonal rates, and colder, with early or late snow shutting the Tomlishorn path some days. Late October and November are the awkward weeks: the boat has stopped, the cableway is in revision, and only the cogwheel side runs until 29 November. December to March is a different mountain: gondola and cableway from Kriens only, up and back the same way, with sledging and snowshoe trails at Fräkmüntegg on the way.
Morning or afternoon
Morning. Summer air is clearest before the valley warms up; on hot days cloud builds on the ridge from late morning, and Beth, who reviewed the Kriens ticket, had it roll in by 11 AM. First cogwheel ascent is 08:10, the Kriens gondola opens at 08:30 in summer (an hour shorter in winter). The webcams on pilatus.ch show the summit live; I check them over breakfast and, if the top is in cloud at eight, I go anyway because it often burns off, but I would not go up at two.

Booking the Golden Round Trip for a November date is the mistake I see most. From 19 October the boat is gone and the trip becomes cogwheel both ways with a lunch voucher. Still a good day, but read the product notes before you pay for a cruise that has ended.
Winter and shoulder-season ticket
The Kriens gondola and Dragon Ride return is the one product that works in every month outside the two closures.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Pilatus cogwheel railway open in 2026?
From 11 May to 29 November 2026, first ascent 08:10 and last 17:30 in season. Outside those dates the mountain is reached from Kriens only; see the cogwheel page.
Can I visit Mount Pilatus in winter?
Yes, from Kriens by gondola and Dragon Ride, up and back the same way, with sledging at Fräkmüntegg. The cogwheel and boat are closed. The Kriens ticket covers it.
Is Mount Pilatus worth visiting in October?
Early October, yes: everything runs until 18 October and it is quieter. From 19 October the boat and cableway are closed, so only the cogwheel side operates until 29 November.
Is morning or afternoon better on Pilatus?
Morning. Cloud tends to build on the ridge from late morning on warm days. Timing of the legs is on the how much time page.
Is there snow on Pilatus in summer?
Snow is normal on the summit into June and possible any month. Closed shoes and a warm layer are not optional; my clothing page has the rule of thumb.
