How to get to Mount Pilatus from Lucerne

The cable car question first
There is no cable car that leaves from Lucerne. The gondola starts in Kriens, a separate town on the south-west edge of the city, and you get there on bus 1 from the stop outside Lucerne station. Kriens Zentrum Pilatus is the stop; the valley station is at Schlossweg 1, a short walk uphill. From there the four-seat panorama gondolas run via Krienseregg to Fräkmüntegg at 1,416 m, about 30 minutes, and the Dragon Ride finishes the job to Pilatus Kulm in about 4 minutes. This route runs all year except for maintenance closures (30 to 31 March and 19 October to 27 November in 2026).
By train to Alpnachstad, then cogwheel
The S5 leaves Lucerne roughly every half hour and reaches Alpnachstad in about 20 minutes. The cogwheel station is across the road from the train. First ascent is 08:10 and the last is 17:30 in season; check pilatus.ch on the day because the operator adjusts by month. Seat reservations are strongly recommended and can be moved up to 30 minutes before departure but not cancelled. Alpnachstad only works between 11 May and 29 November, when the cogwheel runs.
By boat
The lake boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad is the leg that turns a mountain trip into the Golden Round Trip. Scheduled steamers and motor ships take 70 to 90 minutes depending on the stops. It is slow and that is the point. The 2026 boat season ends on 18 October; after that the guided tours substitute a lunch voucher. The boat is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, so pass holders should always take this side of the loop.
Driving
Both valley stations have parking, and the round-trip ticket sold here includes it. Alpnachstad is on the road south towards the Brünig; Kriens is ten minutes from the city. Marzena, who reviewed the ticket, noted the parking was close to the cable car. Remember that a car pins you to one valley station: the classic loop ends on the other side of the mountain from where you started. If you drive, either do the Kriens return or accept a bus and train ride back to the car.

Doing the loop self-guided in summer, go up from Kriens in the morning and come down on the cogwheel. The Dragon Ride cabin faces the rock on the way up, and you keep the panoramic descent for the afternoon when the light is on the lake.
Book the loop with transport included
The Silver Round Trip voucher covers bus 1, gondola, Dragon Ride, cogwheel and the S5 home, plus the seat reservation. Doing it in reverse (train to Alpnachstad first) is allowed.
