Mount Pilatus from Zurich: the day tour, timed and explained

Sihlquai bus station sits behind Zurich main station, track 18, about 50 metres across from the Starbucks. Arrive 15 minutes early with ID and the voucher QR code on your phone; the operator checks both. Jonathan from the US wrote that the guide “keeps everyone on time”, which is a polite way of saying the coach leaves when it leaves.
What the day looks like
- Coach to Lucerne. About an hour on the motorway, with commentary. This is where the bilingual guide earns the second language.
- Free time in Lucerne. Enough for the Chapel Bridge, the old town squares and a coffee. Not enough for a museum. Lunch is not included, and there is no eating in the coach, so this is the moment to buy something for the mountain.
- Kriens, gondola and Dragon Ride. Coach to the valley station, about 30 minutes in the four-seat gondolas to Fräkmüntegg, then under four minutes in the glass Dragon Ride cabin up to Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 m.
- Summit time. Terraces, the Esel viewpoint ten minutes up, Dragon World. Nigel from the UK: “The scenery was incredible.” On a clear day you see the Bernese and Uri Alps one way and the lakes the other.
- Cogwheel down to Alpnachstad. About 40 minutes on the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, 48% at its worst.
- Boat to Lucerne, coach to Zurich. The lake leg is the rest. Brian from the US called the whole thing “an incredible mix of experiences”, which is a fair account of five different vehicles in one day.
Autumn and winter changes
Same rules as every Golden loop. After 18 October the boat is replaced by a lunch voucher. From 19 October to 27 November the Kriens cableway is in revision, so the mountain is cogwheel up and cogwheel down from Alpnachstad. On 28 and 29 November it is cableway up, cogwheel down. After 29 November the cogwheel closes and the tour cannot run as sold until 11 May 2027. Check the season page before choosing a date.

Should you do this or stay in Lucerne
If Zurich is your base and you have one day for central Switzerland, yes. The tour saves you three train changes and a timetable, and Tasneem from the US found it “extremely well laid out and planned”. If you can sleep in Lucerne, the 5.5-hour guided Golden Round Trip gives you the same mountain with the morning to yourself, and the Silver Round Trip does it self-guided. A pass holder travelling independently can also just take the train to Lucerne (about an hour) and buy the mountain sections at 50% off; the pass page explains how.
